COP - ¿De qué se trata?

La respuesta política internacional al cambio climático comenzó con la adopción de la Convención Marco en 1992, que establece un marco de acción cuyo objetivo es la estabilización de las concentraciones atmosféricas de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) para evitar "interferencias antropogénicas peligrosas en el sistema climático". La Convención, que entró en vigor el 21 de marzo de 1994, ahora cuenta con 195 partes.

Polonia - COP 19 Conclusión - 27 horas después de su hora de cierre programado, la reunión adoptó una decisión ADP que invita a las partes a iniciar o intensificar los preparativos nacionales para sus contribuciones destinadas determinados a nivel nacional.

In the last two years, 100 million+ people globally have migrated to cities and by 2050, they will house up to three quarters of the worlds population.  As such, the role of cities in climate mitigation and adaptation is crucial; however climate finance has largely failed to reach these ever growing urban environments.

This high level evening, fittingly hosted in one of the most populous cities in the world, will focus on how investment can be effectively mobilised to support integrated, and socially responsible, low carbon urban development programmes that can be replicated worldwide. Keynote speakers and networking discussions will drill down specifically to the factors needed to secure investment, using examples such as the cities of Delhi, Colombo and Sakarya to demonstrate the work cities are already implementing to become more sustainable and resilient.

Press conference: This meeting is co-hosted by Climate Action, the organisers of Sustainable Innovation Forum to be held during UNFCCC COP20 in Lima on 9^th December.  As an adjunct to the discussions, this evening will also mark the official initiative launch for 2014.

COP - What’s it all about?

The international political response to climate change began with the adoption of the UNFCCC in 1992, which sets out a framework for action aimed at stabilising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to avoid “dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.” The Convention, which entered into force on 21 March 1994, now has 195 parties.

Poland – COP 19 Conclusion - 27 hours after its scheduled closing time, the meeting adopted an ADP decision that invites parties to initiate or intensify domestic preparations for their intended nationally-determined contributions, and resolves to accelerate the full implementation of the Bali Action Plan and pre-2020 ambition. Parties also adopted a decision establishing the Warsaw international mechanism on loss and damage, and the “Warsaw REDD+ framework,” a series of seven decisions on REDD+ finance, institutional arrangements and methodological issues.

 

Who attends?

In Poland last year, the conference drew over 8,300 participants, including 4,022 government officials, 3,695 representatives of UN bodies and agencies, intergovernmental organizations and civil society organizations, and 658 members of the media. This year in Peru we are also expecting a high number of participants at COP20, as Peru is cautiously vocal that Lima should produce a draft agreement for the text. COP20 President and Peruvian Minister of the Environment Manuel Pulgar-Vidal said at a Brown University conference that COP20 needs to provide a solid basis for a strong agreement in Paris.

Lima - World Heritage Site

In the north is the city of Caral, the oldest civilization of America, and to the south is the Archaeological Complex of Pachacamac. Lima’s history predates the colonial presence in the country. The establishment of the viceroyalty transformed the city into the main political and administrative center of South America. During this period, significant churches, monasteries, mansions and balconies were built. The arrival of modernity didn’t transform the historic center, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site.

Visas

Peru is a basically free country of access. Most countries of America and Western Europe do not require tourism visa for entering Peru, and the maximum time of stay that is granted by the authorities is 183 days (it cannot be extended).

For a longer stay for other purposes (business, study, work, etc.) it is necessary to previously request the pertinent visa to the Peruvian consulates. For entering Peru, it is an essential requirement to present the passport in force. Citizens from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela and Chile may enter with their national document card.
